The builds are named as: Inkscape-revision number-system-architecture.***. The higher the revision number the more recent the build. The system number is 10.3 for Panther, 10.4 for Tiger, and 10.5 for Leopard. The architecture is PPC for G4 or G5 based machines and i386 for Intel based machines. For each build two files are present: a .dmg bundle which contains Inkscape and a .txt file which contains information on the system Inkscape was built on. Be careful, the builds are not backwards compatible, which means that a build made on 10.5 does not work on 10.4 (and similarly for 10.4 and 10.3).
These builds are not considered stable so they may crash or behave unreliably. But for the most part they should be OK and it helps Inkscape's team to have some people testing their new features. If you discover a bug please report it in Inkscape bug tracker with detailed information on your system and steps to reproduce the bug.
For those wanting to compile and package Inkscape with support for Python effects/extension, or to add such support to builds which do not have it, we provide compiled packages for both architectures and for Python versions 2.3 through 2.5. To integrate them into a new build, use the option -py of osx-build.sh or osx-app.sh. To add them to an existing Inkscape.app package, open it (right click > Show Package Contents) and copy Python folders to Contents/Resources/python/. If this directory does not exists, your Inkscape.app is too old to support Python extensions, download a newer one from here.
Eventually, for convenience only, we provide X11 packages from Apple for Panther through Leopard. Choose carefully the one corresponding to your system. For Leopard however, we recommend to install the updated version from XQuartz.
